Face Covering Emergency Order #4 goes into effect on November 5, 2021 at 12:01am. See Face Covering Emergency Order #4 and our news release for details. This order will be in effect until November 27, 2021.  At this point in time, Public Health Madison & Dane County does not plan to replace Emergency Order #4 with any other mask requirements.

  • No changes were made to the face covering requirements in Order #4.
  • Face coverings are required among people ages two and older when in any enclosed space open to the public where other people, except for members of the person’s own household or living unit, are present.
  • Face coverings are also required while driving or riding in any form of public transportation.

Current Guidelines (posted 8-13-2021)

For Sports

We recommend teams follow the Sports Action Plan PDF , which outlines what to do if someone on your team has COVID-19.

Below are some additional safety considerations your team may choose to implement to help reduce the spread of illness:

1 - Encourage spectators to wear masks in indoor spaces. (see above for change from Aug 19 to Sept 16. 2021)
2 - Encourage unvaccinated players to wear masks when not actively participating in the sport (e.g., while on the bench, in the locker room).
(see above for change Aug 19 to Sept 16, 2021)
3 - Avoid carpooling that mixes unvaccinated people from more than one household.
4 - Clean and disinfect shared equipment.
5 - Play sports outside if possible.
6 - If playing inside, ensure ventilation systems or fans operate properly. Increase circulation of outdoor air as much as possible,
for example by opening windows and doors. Do not open windows and doors if doing so poses a safety or health risk (e.g., risk of
falling or triggering asthma symptoms) to players or others using the facility.
If you are unvaccinated, see the CDC’s guidance  for playing sports while unvaccinated.
